The Learning Commons, on the Gallatin campus, reopens on Monday, June 29, 2020, for students to access computers and to print course materials.  The hours of operation will be Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. College policy requires everyone to wear face masks and follow social distancing guidelines.

  Math tutoring, math testing, and writing tutoring provided by the Learning Commons will continue online.

Writing & Speech Support

Live Tutoring through Zoom

Live tutoring is available from the Learning Commons via Zoom by appointment. Tutoring is currently available Monday through Thursday from 8 AM – 6 PM and Friday from 8 AM – 4:30 PM. You can use Zoom on your computer or other smart devices, including your phone. To schedule a tutoring session, please follow the instructions below:

The college will be closed on Monday, May 25 and Friday, July 3 and no tutoring will be available on these days.

  1. Click on this link to book an appointment with a tutor: Writing Appointments.  
  2. The tutor with whom your appointment is booked will email you a link for your Zoom session. Please be 5- 10 minutes early for your scheduled session time.

Written Tutoring through eLearn

Online essay review and writing support are available through eLearn from tutors in the Vol State Learning Commons. Look for the Essay Review and Writing Support once you are logged into eLearn. Inside this resource, you can drop off essays for a tutor to review and get back to you. You can also find writing guides, review sample papers, and more!

Math Support

Live Math Tutoring through Zoom

Live tutoring for Math is available from the Learning Commons via Zoom. Drop-in tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 8 AM – 6 PM and on Fridays from 8 AM – 4:30 PM. You can use Zoom on your computer or other smart devices, including your phone. Please have your instructor's name and course number available when you enter the Zoom Tutoring Room.

Learning Support Math: Testing through Zoom

Test proctoring for some mathematics courses is available via Zoom on a drop-in basis (no appointment needed). Please check your syllabus or ask your instructor if you are able to test in the Learning Commons Testing Zoom Room. Testing is currently available Monday through Friday.

Test Instructions

To take a test for an approved course, please follow these instructions:

  1. Download the Zoom app to your computer or laptop. You will need internet, audio, and video capabilities with a webcam or similar device. If you will be using a Chromebook or a tablet to test, please contact us prior to testing (see contact information below).
  2. Turn off any virtual backgrounds.
  3. Check your syllabus or your course information to make sure you are allowed to test in the Learning Commons Zoom Room.
  4. Make sure you have testing attempts available and you have completed any pre-requisite assignments such as the pretest. If not, contact your instructor or complete the pre-requisite assignment prior to entering the testing room.
  5. Prepare your testing area. You will be the only person allowed in the room during your test. We will ask for an entire view of the room.
  6. Clear the area immediately around you of everything that isn’t allowed during your test. Typically, you will be allowed paper and pencil. Some people may also be allowed to use a calculator. If so, make sure it is a calculator that is approved by your instructor.
  7. Minimize distractions by turning off music, televisions, and asking others in the house to allow you uninterrupted time to take your test.
  8. Have a photo ID ready (a student ID, a state issued photo ID, or a passport).
  9. No earbuds or headphones may be worn during the test.
  10. Have your class and the assignment pulled up on your browser before entering the Zoom session.
  11. About 5-10 minutes before the hour you want to test, click on the Zoom meeting link below to join the Zoom waiting room.

The following will be reported to your instructor: Internet or power disruptions/outages, leaving testing area while test is in progress, not notifying the test proctor prior to logging out of the testing session, not responding to proctor’s inquiries while testing, and other incidents the proctor deems necessary to report, such as suspected academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty, and its consequences, are defined in the Student handbook on pages 36-38.

Science department faculty and tutors are providing tutoring sessions during the summer semester. The tutoring sessions are organized by specific courses. All Vol State students have free access to the online tutoring service Tutor.com.

Tutor.com is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The tutoring service covers Math, Business, English, Writing, Science, Health Sciences, Computers, and Foreign Language.
