Introduction - Why Schedule Library Instruction?

Library Instruction is a crucial part of Information Literacy, the set of abilities requiring individuals to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." (American Library Association). The Association of College & Research Libraries has found:

  • Students benefit from library instruction in their initial coursework.
  • Library use increases student success.
  • Collaborative academic programs and services involving the library enhance students learning.
  • Information Literacy instruction strengthens general education outcomes.

Library Instruction at Vol State

The Library offers flexible options for instruction: 

  • In-person sessions are available in the Library Instruction Center, your classroom, or at the Cookeville, Livingston, Springfield centers as well as dual enrollment locations. 
  • We can accommodate short sessions or a full class period, depending on your needs. 
  • Virtual instruction is available via Zoom. 
  • For asynchronous courses or additional support, we also offer a series of tutorial videos covering key research skills from the ENGL 1010/1020 curriculum.
