Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's work, ideas, or words without proper acknowledgment, presenting them as your own. This can include copying text, paraphrasing without citation, or failing to credit sources. For more helpful information see below.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Some guidelines to consider are suggested here:

  • Follow your instructor’s policy on using AI and be transparent on how you use AI in your research.
  • AI can effectively summarize and outline information. It’s much less reliable retrieving factual information.
  • AI can help with understanding complex information, especially for non-native speakers.
  • AI retrieves information that is freely available and not behind firewalls and paywalls. You will not be drawing upon a lot of the best information that is found in journal literature.
  • Fact-check your results against credible sources. AI may sometimes invent data, including references to non-existent publications or incorrect citations.
  • AI can pick and repeat social biases it finds in its’ training data.
  • AI can be used to generate and brainstorm ideas.
  • AI can help formulate effective keywords and search terminology for research in databases.
  • Writing good prompts is crucial for good results. Be detailed and specific.
  • Confidentiality and security of data should be a concern. It is dependent upon the policies of the company that owns the platform.
