At the heart of the book is a sonnet crown triggered by the shooting deaths of three Brooklyn men that becomes an extended meditation on the history of racial injustice and the notion of payback as a form of justice.

Seventeen Modern German Poets by edited by Siegbert Prawer. This selection of post World War II German poetry features the work of Hans Arp, Bertolt Brecht, Günter Grass, Wilhelm Lehmann, Gottfried Benn, Yvan Goll, Nelly Sachs, Peter Huchel, Günter Eich, Christine Lavant, Johannes Bobrowski, Paul Celan, Helmut Heissenbüttel, Eernst Jandl, Ingeborg Bachmann, Hans Magnus Enzenberger, and Günter Kunert. The poems were all originally published between 1945 and 1967, and are here reprinted in German.

Miniatures and Other Poems by Barbara Guest Barbara Guest began writing in the 1950s, a member of the New York School of Poets. She embraces the experiments of Modernism and uses the abstract qualities in words against their sensuousness. Miniatures and Other Poems is a collection of compressed and allusive poems, organized in three series: Miniatures, Pathos and Blurred Edge. Each "miniature" reduces a poem to its most intimate meaning, but this is not to suggest that the significance of the poem is small. Just as little pieces of music blossom into large chords, so these small poems blossom with large intimations.

The Poems of Phillis Wheatley by Phillis Wheatley For nearly thirty-five years Julian Mason's The Poems of Phillis Wheatley (1966) has been the standard edition of the poems and letters of this young black poet of eighteenth-century Boston. This new edition has been extensively revised in light of Wheatley scholarship since its publication. It has been expanded to include all of the fifty-six poems and twenty-two letters now known to be by Wheatley, the significant variants of the poems, and the four Proposals for publication of her works, all of them annotated. This edition contains the recently discovered poem "Ocean," new information about Wheatley's library (including a southern connection), a more accurate reading of a letter central to understanding the response to her 1772 Proposals, new variants of two poems, and a new reading of her George Washington poem. By going back to the original manuscripts (and to first printings when the manuscripts are not extant), Mason has provided the fullest and most accurate edition of Wheatley's poems and letters yet produced. The new index and bibliography assure the volume's usefulness for the scholar, the student, and the general reader.
