Library Instruction: "How To" Demos for Students

Information for Vol State faculty and students on instructional services available at Thigpen Library.

Info Bits "How To" Series*: Fall 2021

Do you need a little bit of information on how to get started with or navigate library resources?

Thigpen Library offers quick 15-minute, "how to" demonstrations to help you find information for your speeches, assignments, and presentations. Each virtual workshop is 20 minutes, which includes approximately 5 minutes at the end of the session for questions.

We'll show you "how to" discover TOPIC ideas, navigate DATABASES, and use NOODLETOOLS to create citations and Works Cited / Reference pages. See descriptions for each demonstration below.

*Registration is required. Demonstrations are subject to cancellation if minimum enrollment is not met.


This demonstration will cover:

  • Where to find topic ideas
  • Where to discover background information
  • How to begin narrowing your topic selection

By the end of the demonstration you will be able to:

  • Select a topic
  • Narrow your topic to fit your assignment requirements


The database demonstration will cover:

  • Keyword searches
  • Limiting results to full text, by date, and by source type
  • Citation information
  • How to save, download, print, and/or email articles

By the end of the demonstration you will be able to:

  • Do basic keyword searches within a database
  • Find articles that you have immediate access to
  • Select articles within chosen date ranges
  • Narrow articles to chosen source types
  • Find citation information for articles
  • Save/retrieve articles


NoodleTools is a research management software package that makes citations, References and Works Cited pages a breeze! No more worrying about alphabetization, hanging indentations, punctuation, and all those other details that are required for APA and MLA citations. NoodleTools has a lot to offer, but we'll just cover the basics in this demonstration. (Please register for a NoodleTools account prior to the demo.)

This demonstration will cover:

  • Creating a Project
  • Creating a citation
  • Downloading and printing Works Cited / Reference page

By the end of this demonstration you will have the ability to:

  • Create citations
  • Produce a properly formatted citation
  • Produce a properly formatted Works Cited/References page
  • Print citation information

NoodleTools is a research management tool, providing students with a single point of access for their research sources, references, notecards, and the ability to create and edit annotated bibliographies, Works Cited, and References pages. The library created a NoodleTools Research Guide to help you register for an account and discover how to utilize all of the research management options NoodleTools offers.
